Volcanic eruption activities of Unzen Fugen-Dake resumed for the first time in 198 years in November 1990. Pyroclastic flows and debris flows took 44 valuable human lives and inflicted destructive damages to houses, fields, forests and public facilities. Restoration have started since 1993 as a national project with implementation of sabo dykes and training dykes starting from the river downstream. This paper reports on the results of construction of a steel slit dam as a part of sabo dam which was carried out using an unmanned construction system.
