[Aim] To clarify whether causes of chronic kidney disease affect the life prognosis of people with diabetes starting chronic dialysis. [Methods] This was a retrospective cohort study of 857 participants with diabetes beginning chronic dialysis. Diabetic nephropathy was defined as having diabetic retinopathy and a urinary albumin‒to‒creatinine ratio≥300 mg/g (or urinary protein≥0.5 g/day). The outcome was all‒cause mortality. Hazard ratios were estimated based on a multivariable Cox proportional hazards model. [Results] During the median follow‒up period of 4.7 years, 208 died. The adjusted hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) of people with diabetic nephropathy (vs. those with non‒diabetic nephropathy) for the outcome was 0.827 (0.496, 1.380, p=0.468). [Conclusion] The results suggested that there are no effects of causes of chronic kidney disease on the life prognosis of people with diabetes starting chronic dialysis.
