Abstract

We designed a new program to foster engineers who can contribute to the global society as a sub-major program in the graduate school of engineering. The competences required for the global engineers are the management of technology, multi-faceted engineering perspectives, and meta-national competence. The term "meta-national" was first introduced in the field of economics, and stands for the ability to appreciate and respect professional and cultural diversity in multinational environments, and hence the meta-national competence is required for the engineers who can function in a global team. The sub-major program consists of seven subjects related to the technological management and innovation in addition to the subject focused on teaching technical English. These subjects are all taught in English in a class where Japanese and foreign students with multi-nationalities join together. According to the survey, all the students who completed the sub-major course were satisfied with the program, and acquired new viewpoints for their career plan, which suggests that the program was successful.
