Objective : The present study aimed to determine whether or not full-length metallic ureteral stents could safely treat malignant ureteral obstruction.
Materials and Methods : We reviewed the clinical outcomes of 27 full-length metallic ureteral stents deployed in 15 patients (mean age, 66.1 years ; male, n = 6 ; female, n = 9) who were diagnosed with malignant ureteral obstruction between December 2014 and April 2015 at the Department of Urology, St Marianna University.
Results : The causes of malignant ureteral obstruction were malignant lymphoma and cervical, uterine, gastric, sigmoid and breast cancers. The follow-up period ranged from 61 to 365 days. Five ureteral stents failed in four patients. The six- and 12-month stent-free survival rates were 87.6% and 58.6 % respectively.
Conclusion : Full-length metallic ureteral stents are practical and safe for patients with end-stage malignant ureteral obstruction.
