Abstract

Introduction: Field amputation is very rare event, but occasionally might be a measure to save a life. While we hear some case reports of field amputation during disaster or prehospital emergency amputation from overseas, we never have any equipment to perform a surgical amputation as Disaster Medical Assistance Team. Object: Formulation of a field amputation protocol for our center. Measure: We search for articles about field amputation with Japan Medical Abstracts and actual field amputation in Japan. We also research protocols for field amputation and case reports from overseas. Result: There are 8 case reports of field amputation in Japan. The mechanism of injury are to be involved in industrial apparatus in most cases, and amputation equipment were brought into the scene later on. We could find some protocols and equipment list for amputation in the United States of America. Conclusion: We must have a field amputation protocol and should prepare for prehospital amputation before we take the field as it might be a lifesaving measure and early extrication for a critical patient.
