Background and Aim: Appropriate cares from emergency medical technicians can lead better outcome in the prehospital setting. For learning and maintaining their skills, they are obligated to receive the training at the hospital before and after obtaining their qualification. Because the number of doctors who instruct emergency medical technicians is insufficient and nursing care cover most of their training, nurses have an important role in the training in a lot of hospitals. The aim of this study is to investigate nurses’ recognition for the training of emergency medical technicians.
Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted on 490 nurses who worked at the critical care and emergency centers across Japan.
Result: 63.8% nurses recognized that they had no educational program in hospital or their program did not stipulate and 69.2% nurses did not take an explanation of the training. Nurses who have no experience working with emergency medical technicians or qualifications related to emergency medicine tended not to understand the program adequately.
Discussion: These results suggest that for enhancing the hospital training of emergency medical technicians, it is necessary to establish systems which make possible for nurses engaging in the training to understand the training objective and teaching contents. Especially establishment of a support system for nurses who have little clinical experience is required.
