Abstract

PURPOSE: We performed a structural analysis of learning objectives for practical nursing training using Case Map (CM) method.

METHODS: Seventeen learning objectives were classified into four categories for the third-grade nursing students and analyzed. First, keywords including verbs were extracted from each learning objective. Second, a CM frame was made using the four categories on the vertical axis and a learning flow that arranged the verbs as the horizontal axis. Finally, a CM of practical nursing training was completed by locating keywords as elements at adequate places in the CM frame. The learning flow structure was then investigated.

RESULTS: A CM could be made by combining the above vertical and horizontal axes. Horizontal axis comprised of six items: (1) understanding and explanation, (2) information rearranging, (3) drafting, (4) practice, (5) evaluation, and (6) improvement. Thirteen verbs extracted from the learning objectives were classified into this CM. The learning flow structure consisted of (3) to (6), which clearly demonstrated the plan-do-check-act cycle. The whole 17 objectives could be overviewed chronologically using the CM notation.

CONCLUSIONS: 1. Multiple learning objectives for practical nursing training could be transformed into a CM successfully. 2. The CM method may advance the structural analysis of the learning objectives. 3. The learning objectives represented by a CM can be a useful material for both students and teachers because of its high visual and structural features.
