Abstract

Objective: To assess rescuers’ activities in cardiopulmonary resuscitation using automated external defibrillator (AED) with integrated electrode pad.

Methods: A total of 152 post-event questionnaires were analyzed. The survey was conducted independently by Asahi Kasei Zoll Medical Corporation by interviewing the rescuers or administrators.

Results: In only one case was the rescuer confused by the unfamiliar electrode pad. Healthcare professionals were more likely to need the advice and illustrative help of others to operate AED. The shocks at non-medical facilities with trained staff were approximately twice as frequent as at medical facilities. The ratio of those that delivered shocks was also higher at non-medical facilities (41.7% vs 18.6%).

Conclusion: Although this survey involves several issues, it offers new insight into the activities of rescuers.
