Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the relationship between critical incident stress and resilience among emergency nurses of advanced critical care centers and to examine the characteristics of nurses with low critical incident stress.

Methods: Emergency nurses of advanced critical care centers in Japan were surveyed about critical incident stress in the previous week using a self-administered, questionnaire.

Results: Responses were obtained from 102 nurses across 19 facilities (valid response rate: 37.4%). Multiple regression analysis revealed that the factors influencing the total score of the Revised Event Impact Scale Japanese version (IES-R) was significantly influenced by the total score of the Nurses’ Resilience Scale. Comparison of the high and low IES-R score groups in facility environment-related factors revealed significant differences in the “understanding of the language of critical incident stress”.

Conclusions: Emergency nurses of advanced critical care centers experienced high levels of catastrophic stress even within the past week. Nurses with low levels of critical incident stress had a better understanding of critical incident stress and demonstrated higher resilience.
