Abstract

In recent years, a large penetration of PV into the power systems has raised concerns about the occurrence of grid congestion, in which active power flow into the transmission lines exceeds operational limits. In response, battery energy storage systems that are directly connected to the power systems are being introduced to reduce grid congestion.

This paper quantitatively analyzes the effect of battery energy storage systems on congestion reduction on the basis of the results of optimal power flow calculations based on PV output predicted by Meso-Scale Model GPV.
