The demand for natural stones with natural beauty and appearance such as color,shades and pattern have been increasing along with the improvement in the quality of buildings.However the recent shortage of skilled personnel has caused a serious problem in stone craft and stone setting.There is a great need to develop new materials and setting method which are independent of the skills of stone work craftmen.This paper reprts a newly developed light weight composite panels obtained by combining thinly sliced natural stone with synthetic xonotlite panel, and describes its setting method.The properties of the panel compared with natural stones are summarized as follows.1) The weight of the newly developed composite panel is about 1/3 that of natural stone of the same size.2) Industrially-produced light weght composite panels show high quality.3) The synthetic xonotlite panel enables the humidity in the air to be controlled.4) The panel is non-combustible and contributes to the presentation of natural resources.The features of the setting method of the panel are as follows:1) It enables adoption of the dry installation method by using adequate anchors so that it is unnecessary to rely on masonry work.2) Partial repairs of the installed panels can be done easily and quickly by this method.3) The reliability of the setting method, together with the light weight of the panel, allows the panel size to be increased.
