Abstract
We investigated the 5-year survival rate of patients with stomach cancer detected by individual gastric cancer screening in Maebashi city from 2004 to 2010. In all examinations, stomach cancer was detected in 522 patients (401 by gastric endoscopic examination and 121 by direct X-ray examination). The 5-year survival rate was 92.0% in the endoscopic examination group, which is significantly higher than the 79.1% detection rate in the direct barium X-ray group.
In the reexamined group, stomach cancer was detected in 199 patients (130 patients by gastric endoscopy and 69 patients by direct X-ray). The 5-year survival rate was 105.3% in the gastric endoscopic examination group, which is significantly higher than the 81.0% detection rate in the direct barium X-ray group. Endoscopic examination showed significant effectiveness in reducing the risk of death as compared with the direct barium X-ray examination.
