Abstract
The prevalence of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) infection is reported to be inversely correlated. We examined the association between UC and H.pylori infection together with gastric atrophy. Furthermore, we analyzed the prevalence of UC according to the ABC classification. We examined 148 control cases that matched 74 UC cases and the age, sex. The rate of H.pylori infection was significantly lower in the UC cases (12.2%) than in the control cases (27.7%), and the positive rate of gastric mucosal atrophy was significantly lower in the UC group (2.7%) than in the control group (12.8%). When comparing the control and UC cases stratified by ABC classification; Control cases (A: 69.6%, B: 17.6%, C: 10.1%, D: 2.7%), UC cases (A: 86.5%, B: 10.8%, C: 1.35%, D: UC 1.35%). There were significantly more UC cases in Group A compared to the other groups. In Group C, there were significantly more control cases. It was shown that H.pylori infection and the proportion of UC cases were inversely correlated, and the latter decreased with the progression of gastric atrophy, probably due to changes in the colonic flora.
