Abstract
This study examines sociological influences which may lead to the occurrences of “Slip” among the residents of Drug Addiction Rehabilitation Centers (DARCs). “Slip” is DARC jargon and refers to addicts who “slip” back to their previous drug-using behaviors. Data in this study is from interviews with Mr. H, who has resided within Y DARC and also experienced a slip during our study period. Specifically, I have examined and discussed the following four points: (1) To avoiding slipping, Mr. H must refrain from relationships with others who have slipped and present an image to others that he is not using drug. (2) In spite of the image he presented to others, Mr. H slipped. (3) After his slip, Mr. H changed his self-image from “H not using drugs” to “H using drugs.” (4) By converting to “H using drugs,” it became necessary for him to address his “desire to be loved”. However, the need to address his desire activated the need for social relations to be avoided within DARC.
