Over the past six decades, I have maintained research collaborations with Japanese scientists while pursuing an academic career focusing on scientific investigations of the physical properties of minerals at high pressures and temperatures. I first visited Japan in 1971; in the ensuing half century, I have paid another dozen visits to research laboratories in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, Tsukuba, Sendai, Sapporo, Matsuyama, Hiroshima, and Misasa. The objective of this paper is to relate this history.
