We review the application of a mean-field approach to an extended Hubbard model to reproduce the observed dependence of the critical temperature Tc on hole-content in the cuprate superconductors, and of Tc on hydrostatic pressure in underdoped Bi2212. Comparing our calculations with the experimental data available for such a material, a nontrivial competition between a hole-driven and an 'intrinsic' contribution to the total pressure derivative of Tc is recovered.
