Abstract

Behind the continued runaway of the US aerospace and info-communications industry has been the huge government investment in space national security technology and the pursuit of innovative R&D. In Japan, when the Basic Space Law came into effect in August 2008, the concept of national security was incorporated into the purpose of space development and utilization, together with the strengthening of the technological capabilities and international competitiveness of space industry. It is important to consider the protection of space assets and the conservation of socio-economic systems through government investment in Japan, taking into account the recent international situation. This paper will categorize national security satellites, and then consider recent technological trends in US communications satellites and reconnaissance satellites, which are leading the way in this field. In addition, it will analyze the status of the US government's budget investment required for such technological development in comparison with Japan, and discuss issues and directions related to future national security satellites.
