Abstract
In this study, we statistically analyzed the quantitative features of "The Tale of Utsuho." "The Tale of Utsuho," which comprises 20 chapters, was written during the Heian period and is considered one of the most important works in Japanese literature; however, author identification for this book and its formation process remain unclear.
For this book, we analyzed the relative frequency of the words and appearance ratio of the parts of speech in order to resolve the abovementioned problems by revealing the quantitative features of the narrative. We compared Chapters 19 and 20 to the other chapters of the book. The results indicate that Chapters 19 and 20 have a high appearance ratio of adjectives and adjective verbs and different appearance trends for words. Therefore, we concluded that chapters 19 and 20 quantitatively differ from the other 18 chapters.
