Chief Information Officers (CIOs) are expected to play multiple-roles in response to multiple-tasks due to the rapid informatization in Chinese corporations. CIO's are required to prioritize their roles because of their limited capacity. A CIO's prioritization process depends on a subjective cognitive importance about tasks. This process is called "CIO role-positioning." There are some factors that influence "CIO role-positioning." In order to find the factors which influence "CIO role-positioning," we adopted a multiple operational design and induced 4 kinds of CIO roles. Then, CIO role-positioning is categorized into two clusters, namely "emphases positioning" and "comprehensiveness positioning." Through empirical analysis, we found that it is the CIOs ' power and authority in the organizational structure that explains CIO role-positioning.
