Cementless total hip replacement has become a widely accepted reconstructive method for hip diseases such as osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis of the femoral head, and so on. However, the appearance of osteopenia of the proximal femur around the implant is a major problem. Therefore we examined the bone density of the proximal femur with a cementless femoral component in 41 joints of 34 patients. The microdensitometry method modified by Itami was used to measure the bone density quantitatively.
The bone density of the proximal femur with a cementless femoral prosthesis was lower than that of the control. The decrease of density appeared by two years after operation. The modified microdensitometry method is useful for quantitatively measuring the density of the proximal femur.
