Recently we experienced a case of synovial osteochondromatosis which originated from the right hip joint. A considerable number of cases of this disease have been reported; however, it does not commonly originate in the hip joint. The characteristics of the hip joint militates against diagnosing the localization of the free bodies and furthermore determining the surgical approach. In this respect, CT scan was very useful in our case.
In order to complete the excision, dislocation of the hip joint seemed important. But a review of the 20 cases reported in detail so far revealed the dislocation left quite a degree of ROM restriction after the operation. Therefore, rather than completing the excision by dislocation, minimal invasiveness at the excision of the free bodies and effective synovectomy may be most important and such a treatment was performed in our case.
