Abstract
Selective laser melting (SLM) is a rapid prototyping (RP) technique that allows producing complex three-dimensional parts rapidly from CAD (computer aided design) models by sintering successive thin layers of powder with a laser beam. In the industrial world, especially, SLM with a metallic powder is a practical method for trial manufacturing and development of molding dies and mechanical parts and for quick manufacture of limited runs of end products. In the medical world, SLM is also an attractive option for manufacturing various custom-made implants. In this review article, we introduce the principles, characteristics and technical trends of the SLM process using biomaterials. We also partially introduce the results of our research into the SLM process using pure titanium, a metallic biomaterial.
