The fact that cancer cells uptake glucose so much compared with normal cells has been known as Warburg’s effect and this phenomenon is utilized for fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) which is widely used as a high sensitivity diagnostic method of cancer. Sugar chain conjugated chlorin specifically accumulated to the cancer cells and photodynamic therapy (PDT) with the irradiation of 660 nm induced 20-50 times more cytotoxicity compared to the second generation photosensitizer, talaporfin. Clinical application of photodynamic diagnosis using sugar chain conjugated chlorin is expected by utilizing its excellent tumor selectivity. We summarized future prospects of development research of PDT.
