Abstract
Conization is an operation performed for early uterine cervical cancer and intraepithelial neoplasia. However, there are some problems such as recurrence after conization and varying diagnoses (conization or cytology or biopsy). We examined these problems using 179 conization cases (an average of 40.2 years of age, 24 to 78 years old). In all cases, cytology and biopsy findings before conization revealed neoplasias; in 9 cases, however, diagnosis was done by biopsy only (6 cases) or cytology only (3 cases). In these 9 cases, it was thought that the biopsy sample was insufficient. On the other hand, no neoplastic lesions were found in 7 of the 179 conization cases. Only one of these seven conization cases had a recurrence. In these conization cases without neoplasia, it was thought that there was spontaneous disappearance of the disease or misdiagnosis of the regenerative changes. There are some reports that cases with recurrence are associated with not only gland involvement but an increase in growth factors and cancer-related genes.
