A statistical observation was made on a total of 500 pregnant women who had reported to the authors' clinic before the end of the 20th week of their pregnancy (356 cases of normopara and 144 cases of pregnancy toxemia) comparisons being made between the pressures of the former half period of pregnancy and those of the latter half, especially, those of the terminal stage.
1. Of those who had followed a normal course of pregnancy, the majority showed a systolic pressure of 111-120 mmHg in the former half period of their pregnancy and 111-130 mmHg in the latter half, while the diastolic pressure was 61-70 mmHg throughout all the period of pregnancy, and the pulse pressure was 50-59 mgHg in the former half and 40-49 mmHg in the latter half. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressures showed a general tendency to increase following the advance in the course of pregnancy, though some showed a reduce or remained unchanged. In most cases, moreover, the increase in both systolic and diastolic pressures remained within the limit of 10 mmHg.
2. In the majority of normopara cases, both the systolic and diastolic pressures show an increase in the latter half period of pregnancy, but this rate of increase is somewhat larger on the diastolic pressure causing a diminishing tendency of the pulse pressure in the latter half period of pregnancy.
3. Changer in both systolic and diastolic blood pressures are relatively smaller among the cases of multipara than those observed on the cases of primipara. Changes in the systolic pressure are especially marked on the primipara cases over 30 years old.
4. In cases of pregnancy toxemia, the majority show the pressures moderately higher than normopara cases, namely, 111-130 mm Hg of systolic and 61-70 mm Hg of diastolic pressures in the former half period of pregnancy. They show, moreover, varying degrees of increase in the latter half period followind the severity of toxemia. Pulse pressure generally diminishes in the patients of the types I and II following the advanced in pregnancy. Whereas, those of the type III show an increasing tendency.
5. Increase in the blood pressure of pregnant women from the former half to the latter half period of pregnancy is the smallest among normopara cases. This increase becomes larger in the patients of pregnancy toximia in the order of the type I, II and III.
