Abstract

To the 12 male and 15 female cases (total 27) of osteoarthrosis of the knee, quadriceps strengthening exercise was given. The methods employed consisted of quadriceps setting exercise and straight leg raising exercise as isometric exercise, as well as a knee extension exercise with iron dumb-bells fixed on soles as isotonic exercise.
When the patients were trained three times or more a week at the hospital with the above exercise, the effect was evident in two weeks in the muscles, which were definitely reinforced in two months after the start of the exercises. The circumference of the thigh, paticularly in the part 10 cm. above the suprapatellar edge, was greatly enlarged in two months after the start of the exercise.
This was concidered due to the recovery of the vastus medialis muscle. The fluctuations in pains indicated that pains lessened remarkably in a month's passage after the exercise in many cases.
