Development of Educational Material for Manufacturing Minded Course of Biomedical Instrumentation

Educational materials especially for the undergraduate students were developed and evaluated. As the first attempts, a simple ECG monitor design implemented on a breadboard was attempted. The design including a high input impedance instrumentation amplifier is practically basic so that a beginner can complete implementation and evaluation within a three hours course by his/her own effort. QRS-complex on the ECG can be observed by their breadboard ECG monitor. After some courses of the breadboard ECG, we are starting a new course of manufacturing education (in Japanese, "Monodukuri-Kyouiku") with biomedical instrumentation device development such as ECG, EMG, PPG monitors and so on. In the new course, PCB (printed circuit board) design by a CAD software and a PCB rapid prototyping system (FP-21T, Mits Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan) are introduced. Students can design and build their own PCBs and finish them in six or nine hours.
