Proposal of Communication System for Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing People Based on Smartphone

<Background>
There are many assistive devices for deaf or hard-of-hearing(DHH) people. However, it cannot be said that they are sufficient as equivalents of calling out.
In this study, we structured remote communication system based on Android smartphone which enabled a helper to notify a DHH person.
<System Structure>
The system was composed of a smartphone(SP) and a SmartWatch(SW). A helper entered text to the SP and pushed the transmission button. The text was transmitted to SW and displayed on SW with short vibration by 'CustomNotifierExtension'.
<Evaluation>
The delay in transmission was less than 1 sec, and the connectable range was about 10 meters.
The system enables helpers to send notification with text message and is efficient for home use.
