It has been demonstrated that the everyday use of cosmetics can influence elderly women to make them feel happy and delightful. Previous studies also showed that some cosmetic therapy programs combining make up application, skin care treatment and fragrance inhalation has been identified as an effective method for improving quality of life (QOL) in elderly females and qualitative observations have shown that cosmetic therapy enhances the expressive, communicative and physical abilities in elderly people. Recently we found that the aged women who performed a cosmetic therapy program for three months exhibited significantly greater scores of mini mental test (MMSE) and higher performance of verbal fluency task (VFT) than control. Therefore it was suggested that cosmetic therapy could potentially maintain cognitive function and prevent progress of dementia symptom. In this presentation, I would like to inrtoduce recent studies of cosmetic therapies for the purpose of active aging in aged society.
