Peripheral nerves transmission block is an important technique for neurophysiology and biomedical studies. For example, it is known that hypertension is contributed to by enhanced activity of the sympathetic nerve tension based on the generic preposition. Recently, development of renal sympathetic denervation (RSDN) enables us to inhibit renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) by removing renal nerve as hypertensive therapy. The approach using RSDN shows that it is very much therapy, but its long-term safety and effectiveness is still under study. Up to now, we have been working in research and development of a technique that provides a quickly initiated and reversible nerve transmission block. In this study, we developed a prototype renal sympathetic cooling device that can block nerve transmission. This device can be inserted through a catheter and has a structure to be placed around renal nerve. It consists of a Peltier element that cooling area is 2.36 mm × 2.38 mm, and a heat sink at heat dissipation surface. For the purpose of its feasibility study, we evaluated the effectiveness of nerves cooling to block nerve transmission without producing nerve “onset response” firing in animal experiments.
