The purpose of this study was to examine the long-term effect of whole body vibration (WBV) on osteoporosis. Anticipating the enhancement of WBV effect, it was delivered with an intermittent and irregular manner to osteoporotic mice. Two weeks treatment of WBV (0.3g, 45 Hz, 3(+-)2 secx150 times/day,9(+-)6-sec interval,5 days/week) showed the beneficial effect on bone volume fraction and mineralization in trabecular bone. Another intermittent and irregular WBV (0.3g, 45 Hz, 3 secx150 times/day,9(+-)6-sec interval,5 days/week) was effective in cortical bone volume but not in trabecular bone. These effects of WBV, however, were not observed in both cortical and trabecular bone in the 4-week treatment. To prolong the WBV effect, a modification of pattern of vibration, including the alteration of frequency and intensity of stimuli, will be needed.
