Abstract

We have proposed concepts of electrical agonist-antagonist muscles ratio (EAA ratio) and sum (EAA sum) for functional electrical stimulation. Our findings indicate that the response of a human elbow joint movement to EAA ratio or external force at constant EAA sum can be obtained as an approximate transfer function model in the form of a "Neuromuscular system + Musculoskeletal system". The objective of study is to develop a novel Electromyography Biofeedback system that uses these models to estimate recovered movements via rehabilitation. In this study, a subject repeated 20 reaching tasks in 1 DOF elbow joint movement. Electromyography of the subject's bi-triceps brachiis was measured and agonist-antagonist muscles ratio (AA ratio) and sum (AA sum) were calculated. During the reaching tasks, parameters of the transfer function model related to AA sum were set arbitrarily and changed by some functions that take AA sum as an argument.
