Abstract
The objectives of this study were to estimate the total waste generation and recycling potential on commercial and institutional sector in Hue city, Viet nam. This study focused on various commercial and institutional sectors including hotels, restaurants, traditional markets/supermarkets, schools/educational institutions, medical institutions, offices, households with business activities, etc. The target samples kept their waste into 4 categories; “General waste,” “Recyclables,” “Food residues,” and “Garden waste,” and the daily waste generation amount was measured for 7 consecutive days. The authors also surveyed the waste composition by 10 physical categories and 54 detail sub-categories. A questionnaire survey was also conducted on relevant factors influencing waste generation such as business scale indicators, and the current status of recycling activities. The waste generation rate (kg/unit/day) was calculated by various business scale indicators such as number of workers, area, and the mean difference of waste generation rate among business category was also analyzed by ANOVA. Based on the estimated waste generation rate by business category, the authors estimated the confidence interval of the total waste generation for each business category in Hue city by Monte Carlo simulation. The 95% confidence interval of total waste generation in Hue was estimated as 144.77 – 190.92 tons/day.
