Abstract

JFE Engineering Corporation has developed its unique “High-Temperature Gasifying and Direct Melting Furnace” technology, and has successfully applied it in Waste to Energy plants to treat and gasify various types of waste as well as achieve the melting of ash through the usage of coke derived from coal.In order to reduce the consumption of Coal coke, JFE Engineering Corporation has conducted a series of demonstration tests using Petroleum coke as substitute. A residue of the petroleum refining process, Petroleum coke presents various properties as fuel. JFE Engineering used two types of Petroleum coke (i.e. Medium and Low Strength types) during these tests. The results of these tests demonstrated a reduction in the consumption of Coal coke of up to 40% using medium-strength Petroleum coke, while a 30% reduction was reported when using low-strength Petroleum coke. In addition, it was demonstrated that the optimum input of Petroleum coke and Coal coke mix can be estimated by using the Coke Strength after Reaction (CSR) index, and the Coke Reactivity Index (CRI).
