Industrial sector faces the issue of carbon neutrality because of its significant amount of CO2 emissions. One potential approach to reduce CO2 emissions from industrial facilities is the use of energy from municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration plants. Currently many incineration plants in Japan produce electricity, but its conversion efficiency is only about 14% on average and even about 20% at maximum. To maximize the utilization of energy contained in waste, heat supply from incineration plants to industrial facilities is expected. It will increase the incomes of incineration plants as well as decrease the cost of industrial facilities. This study evaluated CO2 emissions and project costs for the utilization of heat from a large-scale MSW incinerator for an industrial facility under some scenarios on future MSW, assuming that the large-scale MSW incinerator is built near the industrial facility that consumes a large amount of heat.
