This research aims at clarifying fundamentally the characteristics of the mechanisms for the formation of the smooth sheared surface and further at developing a new precision shearing process based on the fundamental investigation. In this first report, it is shown that there are three kinds of mechanisms for the formation of the smooth sheared surface that is, the mechanism by plastic deformation, the cutting mechanism and the intermediate quasi cutting mechanism. These mechanisms are distinguished from each other concerning the direction of the severely shear deformed plane and the ratio of the punch penetration to the die penetration. But these mechanisms have intimate connections among each other because they can shift continuously with the change of the stock length and can shift successively within a single punch travel when the stock length is relatively shotr. Finally, the order of the occurrence of these mechanisms in the shearing process is summarized.
