The effects of the heat transfer and the generated latent heat of phase transformation on the heat treatment of carbon steel (quenching) are studied analytically and experimentally. The effects of the heat transfer and the latent heat of phase transformation on the results of quenching are found not so simple as generally expected. Thus far, the cooling rate has not yet been exactly defined. Using the instantaneous cooling rate at the A1 point it is shown that this cooling rate has the most important effect on the microstructure and the hardness of the quenched steel.
