In order to develop a shape memory alloy heat engine, the basic output power characteristics of a twin crank heat engine are investigated. As a shape memory alloy, the TiNi alloy wire with an outer diameter of 0.75 mm is used. The material is heat-treated to memorize the shape of the helix. The results are summarized as follows. (1) The output power of the engine increases with the hot water temperature. The rotational speed, at which the output power is maximized, shifts toward higher speeds. (2) The maximum output power decreases in a range above a certain hot water temperature. (3) The output power increases as deformation of the shape memory alloy helix becomes large.
