A simulator model has been developed to evaluate emergent behaviors in elevator systems. The dynamic forces caused by the emergent behaviors govern the structural design. The proposed simulator of the modeled multi-body system can easily predict complex emergent behaviors, including buffer strike, rope slip, and high-mode rope vibration. This simulator is thus a powerful tool for use in the elevator design process. In this paper, the simulation model is explained in detail, and the simulation results of buffer strike are compared with experimental ones. Based on the results of numerical analysis, an optimal design is proposed for an elevator structure, one that reduces the dynamic forces.
