Railway Speed-up: A Review of Its History, Technical Developments and Future Prospects

This short paper briefly summarizes some key events in the history of the speed-up of railways. Some of the factors inhibiting speed-up of the railway as a system are reviewed: safety, passenger comfort, economics and environmental performance. Finally, some speculations are made on the future of railway speed-up.
