Numerical simulation coupled with design optimization is recognized as one of the powerful tools in industry. In other words, design optimization generally requires numerical simulation. This paper proposes a design optimization using computational intelligence without numerical simulation, which is called “Field Optimization (FO)”. The design optimization is performed using experimental results in the FO. The proposed approach is applied to optimization of variable blank holder force (VBHF) trajectory in sheet metal forming using AC servo press. Optimal slide velocity as well as the optimal VBHF trajectory is handled as an example. Without conducting numerical simulation, the design optimization is successfully performed.
