Impact tensile properties of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy friction welded butt joints are evaluated using a tensile split Hopkinson bar. Friction welded butt joints are produced from round bars of 16mm diameter under three different welding conditions. Joint specimens are machined from friction welded butt joints. Tensile stress-strain curves for the joint specimens at high rates of strain up to ε ≒ 1200/s are presented and compared with those at low rates of strain obtained in an Instron testing machine. The effects of welding conditions and strain rate on the ultimate tensile strength, uniform strain and absorbed energy are examined. It is shown that the tensile properties for the joint specimens very greatly, depending on the welding parameters as well as the strain rate.
