The present paper investigates the effect of mechanical processing on strain-induced martensite of SUS304 stainless steel. Three different ball-end mills are used to machine the materials into corresponding shapes by plane cutting and side cutting. In order to confirm the effects of different ball-end mills and cutting ways on the extent of strain-induced martensite around the cutting surface, the Vickers hardness test and EBSD analysis were used. The results show that parts of the austenite phase turned to martensite phase. At the same cutting condition, the higher the cutting resistance during machining, the more serious the strain-induced martensite transformations.
