Abstract
This paper deals with a countermeasure against pattern formation phenomena generated on rolling contact systems using variable stiffness type dynamic absorbers. This pattern formation refers to the polygonal deformation phenomenon of the metal roll surface. This problem is similar to the other pattern formation phenomena, for instance, polygonal deformations of the grinding rolls, regenerative chatters in cutting, the polygonal deformation of the work roll in a hot leveler. The authors theoretically analyzed using a simple model to clarify the advantages of the variable stiffness type dynamic absorbers. It was found that the growing speed of the pattern formation was delayed by attaching the variable stiffness type dynamic absorbers.
