Abstract
Several papers are treating problems of vibration analysis of a beam with breathing cracks. However, those papers are regarding the change in the stiffness due to the opening and closing of the crack as prescribed periodical change. The opening and closing of the breathing crack depends on the curvature, or the bending moment, of the beam. Thus in order to grasp the effect of the breathing crack on the vibration characteristics accurately, a breathing crack model which opens and closes depending on the bending moment should be used. In this paper, a procedure of analysis for steady-state vibration of a beam with brteathing cracks is presented. In the presented procedure, the finite element method based on the mixed variational principle is used to derive the governing equations of motion. Then, the governing equations are solved by the harmonic balance method. An example of the analysis by the presented procedure is given.
