Abstract
Friction between two relatively sliding surfaces possibly excites the structure with unstable vibration response that emits squeal noise. Many methods have been developed to predict squeal noise using theoretical models of structures. In this paper the authors propose an idea to predict the possibility of squeal noise occurrence in a real structure with friction by means of experimental spatial matrix identification. Using spatial matrices that derived from experimental modal data, mode coupling that causes instability of the structure can be predicted. This method can make it possible to predict the incident of squeal noise within the practically realistic range of friction coefficient and contact stiffness. The method is presented with showing an experimental verification study using a simple L shape frame.
