Abstract
This paper provides a new fault detection algorithm for improving reliability of smart structures. The proposed method is based on a subspace state space system identification (4SID) method. A recursive 4SID fault detection algorithm has been developed by using both residual signals and estimated system parameters. It is shown by the hardware experiment on a flexible smart beam that the proposed algorithm is highly effective for detecting abrupt changes in the dynamic response of the closed-loop system by using the measured displacement data.
