Abstract
Whirling instability caused by the fluid moment on the back shroud of Francis turbine runner is discussed. The fluid moments caused by the whirl and precession motions were measured by model experiments. The vibration of an overhung rotor was evaluated by a lumped parameter vibration model and the relative importance of the whirl and precession moments is discussed.
