Abstract

One of the basic concepts of passive vibration isolators is to reduce the transmissibility of vibration by lowering the natural frequency by lowering the support stiffness. However, to use this method for vertical vibration isolation, it is necessary to achieve both high static stiffness and low tangent stiffness, taking into account the weight of an isolated object itself. In this study, the feasibility of achieving zero stiffness is examined by combining the buckling of beam elements and a honeycomb structure, based on the idea that it is possible in principle to reduce the total spring constant to as close to zero as possible by using negative and positive stiffness.
