Abstract
We have developed a topology optimization tool, which can be easily treated in the concept design phase using beam elements. In the conventional tool, we utilized a solid section as a design variable. However, it is not always appropriate to use the solid section since a frame of an automotive structure consists of a thin walled section. In this paper, we propose a new topology optimization program, in which a thin walled section is used as a design variable. Next, we present a special tool based on the above program which is customized for an under body structure using Microsoft/Excel. In the tool, a panel element is also used as a non-design variable. Finally, the effectiveness is demonstrated using this tool.
